CARLISLE-born presenter Helen Skelton has met with pupils at Brampton Primary School to help launch a new environmental campaign.

The Countryfile presenter and Strictly Come Dancing star, who was just pipped to the glitterball by wildlife photographer Hamza Yassin, in the latest series of the popular BBC show, met pupils from the local primary school as they launched their 'bring back the hedgehog' campaign.

This campaign focuses on promoting ways to make local gardens more hedgehog friendly, including creating special hedgehog houses.

Accompanied by her daughter Elsie, Skelton took part in the event with the students which was held at Brampton Community Centre last week.

Brampton Primary School headteacher, Richard Clark, speaking after the event, thanked the star for meeting his pupils.

He said: "It was a fun afternoon.

"We were so pleased that B2Z invited Brampton Primary School to take part in an informal gathering to start their bring back the Hedgehog Project.

"It was a real treat to meet Helen and her daughter Elsie. Helen was fantastic with our children, she gave her time to listen and respond to each of them personally. Oh, and Elsie rightly stole the show."

The event was also part of another local project, Brampton 2 Zero, which is working to achieve a carbon-zero community and prevent climate change.

"It was great to be involved and Helen was fab. We really hope the project will be a success and help to support the hedgehog population. Our children are really keen to learn more and be involved," Richard added.
