The News & Star readers have shared their thoughts on STACK Carlisle being set to open next year.

At a meeting today (Wednesday), councillors gave the green light to the plan to create a multi-million pound 'container village' at the site of the former Her Majesty’s Theatre, which will transform part of the Lowther Street Car Park.

STACK, which runs highly-successful similar schemes in the north east, announced late last year its plan to use 50 shipping containers to create a complex which will have five bars, 10 street food outlets, a central plaza with a balcony and stage – all covered by a glass framed roof.

Here's what you had to say.

Becky Nicholson said: "This is a good thing, it's bringing a concept to Carlisle which was very popular over in Newcastle.

"People in Carlisle complain that were behind in the times then something new comes along and we bash it before it's open."

Shirl Hall said: "Carlisle is so behind the times in many areas, small towns have more going on than here."

Sammy Norman said: "It will benefit everyone in the city, they host family days and major events. Look at what they do over the northeast.

"It’s not just about nightlife they put loads of family events. It will bring much-needed footfall to the city. Not to mention jobs created."

Neill Winch, CEO of STACK, said he is delighted with the decision, which will lead to STACK Carlisle opening in 2024.

“We are very excited to be moving forward in our plans to bring STACK to Carlisle,” he said.

“We have said from day one that it will not only prove a really welcome boost to the leisure offering in the city but will also help the local economy by attracting more visitors – which will benefit everyone.”

The proposed site is owned by Daniel Johnston (1982) Ltd and Max Connon from the company echoed Neill’s words.
