A comedian will be bringing his brand of ‘big room’ comedy to a venue in Cumbria.

Scott Bennett, who has been described by the Evening Standard as ‘live comedy’s best-kept secret’, and who has written for many acts like Chris Ramset and Jason Manford, will perform at the Old Fire Station in Carlisle this month.

His last two shows, Leap Year and Relax, were nominated for ‘best show’ at the Leicester Comedy Festival.

During the lockdown of 2020, Scott pioneered the viral hit, Stand up from the Shed, a weekly topical live-streamed stand-up show from his actual garden shed.

The show achieved national coverage on Sky News, BBC News and 5 Live and has had over 150,000 views.

As a filmmaker and writer of comedy shorts Scott has had his work officially selected for The Beeston Film Festival 2019 and the New York City Comedy Shorts Festival 2020.

Speaking to the News and Star, Scott described his comedy as observational and big room: “It’s basically just pointing out the stuff everybody experiences.

“There’s so much going on in the world and in life, if you can find an angle on it to have a laugh that’s a good thing.

“It’s sort of all about family, stuff I relate to, because you write about what you know, the little moments that all happen but you never notice.”

On this tour, he’s going all over, from big cities to smaller ones, but said that it’s seeking out the smaller, perhaps unseen venues, that he finds a great appreciation for comedy as well as the larger scene.

On what people can expect, he said: “It's big room comedy, proper Saturday night out.

“There’s so much going on at the moment, the cost-of-living crisis, the pandemic which people are still reeling from, it’s your sort of Peter Kay experience, stuff where you can come along and you don’t have to think about the world.”
