A NEW theatre school is set to open in west Cumbria, with a pledge to be inclusive to people of all abilities.

Bethany Goodall, 24, from Workington, who is opening the school, has always been involved in theatre, having had singing lessons from the age of 6 and is still an avid member of local theatre group Workington Amateur Operatic Society.

Bethany has completed a degree in musical theatre and a masters degree in arts and cultural business management.

The passion behind the business came from a desire to bring theatre to west Cumbria. Bethany said: "People believe that you need to be in London to receive the best training and have the best chance of book jobs but I want to change this ideal and create a culture in the North of showing our home grown talent."

The Cumbria Community Foundation and Centre for Leadership and Performance had advertised for their social enterprise programme where candidates get £1,000 and expertise to help set up their business.

This is ultimately what has helped Bethany to start up and get it off the ground.

Bethany wants to eventually offer classes for 3-6 years and 1 to 1 classes for people who want to do their LAMDA exams which can give them UCAS points to get into university.

Bethany said: "I hope to create a physical performing arts school that people can attend from the age of 11 with classes for younger people outside of school hours.

"It would have Level 2 and 3 courses as well as a BA Hons degree which we could provide through a partnership with a University.

"All of these things are a long way in the future but I am ambitious that we can get to that point.

"The thing that makes us unique is the inclusive culture that we adopt. Everyone, no matter of ability can come and learn in a friendly environment."

Lake District Academy of Theatre will not require an audition.

To begin with, musical theatre workshops will be held on a Thursday at St Joseph's School in Workington. Classes are £5 as we want to keep it as affordable for parents as possible. Get in touch with Lake District Academy of Theatre on social media.
