A CARLISLE fishmonger has been recognised on a national scale having netted a prestigious retailer award.

Bells Fishmongers scooped Best Retailer in the Northwest at the Farm Shop and Deli Awards 2023 (on April, 25).

The fishmongers, who have been trading in fish and shellfish since the 1970s, were first put forward for the award by a faithful customer.

Owner Tony Bell, who has been in the fish game since 1979, said it was 'brilliant' to be recognised.

"It's brilliant. It's nice to get a bit of recognition that we're doing the right thing.

"A lot of it was based off of customer feedback, so that's great to see.

"We just do our thing and it's great to know it's the right thing.

"We'll keep doing what we're doing, try and improve and ultimately keep the customers happy," he said.

Across the northwest, Bells faced stiff competition as they competed against Kendal's Loving Artisan Bakery and Roast Mutton, Liverpool's Kami's West Derby, Ingleton's Country Harvest, Manchester's Chorlton Cheesemongers and Gazegill Organics, near the Yorkshire Dales.

Chorlton Cheesemongers also walked away with an award on the night celebrating businesses across the northwest.

On social media following the announcement, they said: "We are absolutely over the moon to even get to the final alone never mind win, as the exceptional standard is so high from like-minded, passionate independent food retailers across the whole of the UK.

"Huge thank you to the entire dream team who smash it 24/7 365, every time they stick on some whites and an apron we know we're getting 110 per cent, without their outstanding dedication and drive this simply would not be possible.

"Then there are the other superstars in our lives, our customers. Who are without doubt the finest, most loyal bunch from John O Groats to lands’ end and beyond," they said.
