LOCAL businesses in west Cumbria have been hit with extensive damage following strong winds last night (April 12).
The Strand on Lowther Street in Whitehaven had a visitor in their beer garden, when a roof from an old joiners workshop flew into the back of the bar crushing the beer garden's furniture.
The Strand has taken a day to off to get back up and running but have ensured they will be back by tomorrow (April 13).
They said:
"It’s not our roof it’s came off the old joiners workshop 20meters away."
"We are open as normal from tomorrow and we are working to get the beer garden up and running as fast as possible thanks."
Heron's Food on King Street in Whitehaven also sustained damage in the strong winds as the signage above the shop was tore off meaning that fire engines had to attend the scene.
According to Met Office, winds in Whitehaven reached a peak of around 79mph at 11 last night. Other areas in Whitehaven reported damage, such as fallen trees and debris.
Cumbria Police said: "Cumbria Police are getting numerous reports from around the county of fallen trees, damage and debris due to high winds."
