An inn and microbrewery in Cumbria has been sold to an anonymous hotel group.

The Brackenrigg Inn and Brewery, in Ullswater, has been sold for £2.1million, after being listed for sale by Colliers.

Business partners Garry Smith and John Welch owned the inn since 1996, and renovated the building by converting the stable into a microbrewery, generating 200 barrels of beer a year, but have now sold it to retire.

The hotel group, which remains anonymous, hopes to expand its portfolio of leisure businesses in the Lakes as a result of the purchase.

Colliers said the group was not ready to make an announcement yet.

Neil Thomson, who works in Colliers’ hotel agency team as an associate director, said: “The Brackenrigg is unique, full of character and boasts an excellent trading position which draws in many local and national visitors.

“Garry and John have done an excellent job developing the inn into the much-loved business it is today and I am really pleased we were able to find a suitable buyer for them.

“We wish them a happy retirement.”
