IN this edition of nostalgia, we look back to the year 1987 when the new Kwik-Fit car shop opened in Carlisle.

In 1987, the store was Britain’s largest independent tyre and exhaust company. The new centre on Junction Street, Carlisle had more than 3,000 tyres in stock.

Those working at the new store included partner Brian Telford and master manager Trevor Price.

The history of Kwik Fit started in 1971 when Sir Tom Farmer opened the first Kwik Fit centre on McDonald Road, Edinburgh, Scotland.

Since 1971, Sir Tom sold the business to the Ford Motor Company in 1999 and since 1999, it has been sold again numerous times.

As of 2023, there is still a Kwik-Fit centre on the Junction Street site.

The Cumberland News carried an advertising feature for the new Kwik-Fit Autocare Service Centre in Carlisle centre, and the pictures we captured are above.
