Scouts in Cumbria took part in the county’s first ever ‘Monopoly Run’.

Taking the idea and form from the classic board game of the same name, the run saw Scouts and Cubs take part in a challenge across Carlisle, locating various sites and completing tasks in order to win.

Organised by Nathan Ion and Chloe Harrison, the event took place on March 26, starting at Trinity School.

Nathan said he organised it to join all groups in the area to take part after he took some Carlisle Scouts to participate in a similar event in Manchester the year before.

The idea was to somewhat replicate a Monopoly board into an orienteering-like competition, where participants are tasked with going to certain buildings or locations, taking a selfie, and sending it to a leader to record a point.

There were also points on offer for locating a hiding police officer, and for the funniest team.

Another, harder, more luck-based challenge, inolved finding and taking a picture with a firefighter.

Reflecting on the event, which saw participants aged between eight and 17, Nathan said: “It went really well.

“There were about 80 young people from Carlisle and a few members of the public messaged us after to ask us what was going on, because they saw a load of Scouts wandering about the city.

“It was a local event for Carlisle but we offered it to neighbouring areas as well.

“The furthest team came from Maryport, and they really enjoyed it.

“Carlisle Police were brilliant, a police officer came along and introduced himself, and he then went off and hid in Carlisle somewhere, where Scouts had to find him and get a picture of him.

“I think he parked near Carlisle College, a couple of teams got him quite quickly, but he kept moving around.

“Next year there will be much more notice and we will hold one in Keswick.

“I know Carlisle will travel down for that, but we want to get a lot more surrounding areas involved in that as well.”
