AN asylum seeker who faced charges of assault has had the case against him dropped.
The male, who was living at The Waverley Hotel in Whitehaven at the time of the alleged offences, had pleaded not guilty to two charges of assault by beating at a hearing on December 16.
The offences were alleged to have taken place in Whitehaven on November 7 last year.
A trial was due to be held at Workington Magistrates’ Court on March 17 but the witnesses did not appear. No evidence was offered and the case was dismissed.
Court records indicated that the defendant was 21 years old but he had claimed to be under 18 and so cannot be named for legal reasons.
It is understood that he has now moved away from the area.
