A BARBER who was found in possession of amphetamine told police the drug was cheaper than cocaine.

Raza Hassan, 30, was arrested by police on February 10 over a number of offences, Workington Magistrates’ Court was told.

Pamela Fee, prosecuting, said the defendant was seen trying to conceal two small bags of white powder, suspected to be cocaine. It was found to be amphetamine.

During interview, Hassan gave a pre-prepared statement to police, which said the drug was for his own personal use. He said it was cheaper than cocaine.

Hassan, of Friars Garth, Abbeytown, pleaded guilty to possessing a Class B drug.

The defendant, who had no legal representation in court, said: “I just want to say I’m sorry. It will never happen again, I promise.”

The court heard that Hassan owns a barber’s shop in Silloth.

Magistrates fined the defendant £666 and ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £266 victim surcharge.

An order was made for the forfeiture and destruction of the drugs.
