FOR this week's Nostalgia, we have been looking at old memories of World Book Day and we must admit it's a real page-turner!

Each year schools all over the county dress up as their favourite book characters and celebrate their favourite authors and literature.

The original idea was conceived in 1922 by Vicente Clavel, director of Cervantes publishing house in Barcelona, as a way to honour the author Miguel de Cervantes and boost the sales of books. It was first celebrated on 7 October 1926, Cervantes' birthday, before being moved to his death date, 23 April, in 1930

In 1995, UNESCO decided that the World Book and Copyright Day would be celebrated on 23 April, as the date is also the anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, as well as that of the birth or death of several other prominent authors. In a historical coincidence, Shakespeare and Cervantes died on the same date, 23 April 1616.

The first World Book Day in the UK and Ireland took place in 1997 to encourage young people to discover the pleasure of reading.

From Disney princesses, to dinosaurs and angels to action men, children across the county love getting involved.

Take a look at some of the early 2000s memories of World Book Day and see if you can spot yourself amongst the pics.

Our photos from over the years show children from Brunswick Road School in Penrith enjoying themselves. Pupils of St Begh’s School and St Mary’s School in Kells both too the opportunity to visit Whitehaven Library while Belah School in Carlisle the children dressed up in costumes from round the world.
