A CHURCH in Silloth which is more than 150 years old could be converted into a home following a planning application submitted to Allerdale Borough Council.

A planning application has been registered to the council to change the use of the building from a church to a single dwelling, which will include the demolition of small extension.

Trinity Methodist church, on the corner of Wampool Street and Solway Street dates back to 1870.

The chapel was constructed in 1870 with the vestry and Sunday school added in 1888.

The building is constructed in a traditional style using red brick for the walls and the roof is finished in grey slate.

The building was on the market last year for cash buyers with a guide price of £40,000.

Documents from the time of sale, attached to the application said: "A mid Victorian church dated from circa 1888, now closed for services and offered for sale by North Cumbria Methodist Circuit.

"The building offers scope for residential or commercial conversion (subject to relevant planning) but is only available to cash buyers," the documents add.

"Located in the centre of Silloth offering a range of local amenities in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty."

There are set to be some changes to the outside of the building, should the planning application be approved by the council.

A design and access statement said: "Some changes to the external facade of the building are proposed. In proposing these changes, consideration has been given to reducing the visual impact of the changes and introduction of modern materials, in, the design and choice of materials.

"A new vehicular access is proposed from Wampool Street. This will be achieved by the partial removal of the existing steel railing fence and replaced with steel railing gates."

The application for the change of use of the church was validated by Allerdale Borough Council on February 22 with the application now under a consultation process.

"Four dormer style windows are proposed to the roof of the building. The dormer roof, sides and fascia will be finished in grey slate matching the existing roof."
