Residents of a new housing estate have been raising money for a new defibrillator.

Chris Neen and his neighbours at Keekle Meadows, Cleator Moor, set up a Go Fund Me in order to raise the cash for a community defibrillator.

Their goal was to raise £750 and anything over that will be donated to the British Heart Foundation, so far, they have managed to raise £980.

The Zoll De-Fib and outside cabinet will be sited on the offices of High Grange on Keekle Meadows.

Once the estate is completed there will be around 200 houses, with the nearest defibrillator currently being at Cleator Moor square 1.1 miles away, having one on site could potentially save someone's life.

Mr Neen said: "I work at the fire service at Sellafield, and we've had instances over the last 12 to 18 months where people have suffered cardiac arrest.

"In the area where we live, seven or eight years ago there wasn't a single house here, now there's over 140 and there'll be 200 when done.

"I realised there wasn't a defibrillator nearby so I spoke with some of the people on the cul-de-sac and asked if they would like to chip in.

"The property developer was happy for us to put it on the office site, and it was looking to cost £1500.

"They also said that they would pay some money towards the costs. One of my friend's knows first aid and CPR so he is going to be doing some awareness training for people on the estate if they want to take part.

"We have seen instances where we've arrived on emergency scenes and the person hasn't been getting CPR right away, likely due to the other people being frightened or in shock.

"We'll be letting people see how it's done, there's lots of kids on the estate so it will be good to get them involved as well, often some kind of CPR is better than none."

The neighbours decided on using a Go Fund Me page to raise the money and the defibrillator will be set to arrive on the estate in the coming weeks.
