A DRIVER crashed into a roundabout after he left a petrol station without paying for fuel.

Police were called to a collision at a roundabout near Workington at 2.50am on January 23, Workington Magistrates’ Court was told.

The driver, Uchenna Obiejesie, 20, said he had tried to drive into the roundabout deliberately.

Lee Dacre, prosecuting, said the defendant had left Euro Garage filling station in Cockermouth without paying for £59 worth of fuel and cigarettes worth £13.40.

Obiejesie was taken to hospital but became “agitated” and the female officer apprehended that she was going to be headbutted by him, the court heard.

The defendant, of Moresby Parks Road, Moresby, Whitehaven, pleaded guilty to theft from a shop, making off without payment and common assault of an emergency worker.

John Cooper, defending, said Obiejesie was only 20 years old and this was the first time he had been in trouble.

Magistrates imposed a 12-month community order with 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days.

Obiejesie was ordered to pay £72.40 in compensation to Euro Garage filling station and a £114 surcharge.

No order was made for costs.
