A Carlisle legend had a foot in both camps when he returned as a special guest at a non-league clash in the city.

Former United star Peter Garbutt, 83, was at Carlisle City’s game against another of his former clubs, Crook Town.

The man who featured in some memorable Blues games and seasons watched City get the better of Crook in their Northern League Division One game at Gillford Park.

The former defender was part of a Crook side that enjoyed some famous days in the 1960s – notably captaining the County Durham club to victory at Wembley in the FA Amateur Cup when they defeated Enfield 2-1 in 1964.

Later that year he made the step up from the amateur ranks – joining Carlisle United.

He joined the Blues under Alan Ashman after United had clinched promotion back to Division Three.

He eventually established himself in the side and went on to become one of their most dependable players.

Garbutt was an ever-present for the Cumbrians in Division Two in 1967/8, a season which also saw him turn in a starring performance in the Blues’ sensational FA Cup third round victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

He was with United until 1970, totting up 148 appearances in the blue shirt.

Garbutt was at City’s game on Saturday as goals from Dan Kirkup and Sam Atkinson gave the hosts a 2-1 victory, Jack Armstrong replying for Crook.

The result saw Jim Nichols’ City 12th in the table with Crook 16th.
