Teenage Carlisle United midfielder Kai Nugent has joined Workington Reds on loan.

The youth team star has linked up with Danny Grainger’s side to bolster their promotion push in NPL West.

Nugent, who has been around the first-team squad at Carlisle this season, has joined Reds on a work experience loan, the west Cumbrians announced.

It will give the 17-year-old first-team experience as he continues his bid for a professional deal at Brunton Park.

Nugent links up with third-placed Workington ahead of their home clash with Bootle today.

The academy player featured for Paul Simpson’s first-team in pre-season as Nugent made a number of appearances in Carlisle’s friendlies.

He is still awaiting his competitive first-team debut, but was on the bench for this season’s Papa John’s Trophy game at Barrow in October.

“We would like to thank Carlisle United for their assistance in getting the deal done so quickly,” Workington said.

Nugent is the second United youth player to head out on loan, with midfielder Dan Hill currently with Cleator Moor Celtic.

From the young professional ranks, the Blues also have Max Kilsby, Sam Fishburn and Lewis Bell on loan at Annan Athletic, Morpeth Town and Gretna 2008 respectively.
