Avanti West Coast has warned that a ‘large number’ of cancellations is expected on Saturday, January 28.

Passengers who were due to travel on Saturday have been advised to travel on alternative days or ask for a full refund.

A spokesperson for company said: " Due to high staff shortages, we are unfortunately expecting a large number of cancellations on Saturday, January 28.

“Trains are likely to be extremely busy, and passengers should check their journey online before coming to the station."

The government controversially extended Avanti West Coast’s contract by six months last year but warned the company it would have to ‘drastically’ improve if it were to be extended longer.

Avanti West Coast were also ordered to make ‘significant improvement’ to its weekend ticket availabilities this month.

Despite Avanti initially making ‘reasonable progress’ and increasing notice for passengers to book travel in the lead up to Christmas, the position has ‘deteriorated’ in 2023 according to the Office of Rail and Road.
