A MOBILE fish and chip van has bagged a plaice in the National Fish and Chip Awards.

The Chippie Van is a finalist in the Best Mobile Operator category of the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) awards.

The category celebrates vans or trailers offering high standards to rural locations and those catering for weddings and corporate events.

An anonymous panel of industry experts chose the Penrith business, JoJo's, Stafford, and Pimp My Fish in Newmarket after a rigorous judging process.

The Chippie Van is run by Angel Lane Chippie's Daniel and Dave Harding and took to the roads during the Covid pandemic across Eden and South Carlisle.

Daniel and his dad Dave have owned the Angel Lane Chippie since December 2007 and under their management, it was won several awards - including best in the North West.

According to the deeds of the property, it became a fish and chip shop in June 1928 and the Hardings believe it is Penrith’s longest-established fish and chip shop.

“We’re proud we’ve been recognised for the quality and care we put in", said Daniel. “We’ve got very good reviews and a good, loyal clientele built up now.

“A lot of people could choose to drive into town now and get fish and chips, but still wait for their scheduled night in their village. I think that says a lot.

"The cost of things is a challenge, but it's trying to keep an open mind to new ideas, diversifying and taking what business you can in order to survive.

"Fish and chips is still a well-loved dish nationally, so hopefully people still treat themselves to something during the hard times."

President of the NFFF, Andrew Crook, said: “Mobile fish and chip units have many different challenges to bricks and mortar businesses and to keep standards consistently high, is a testament to the professionalism of these finalists.

"Whether serving rural communities or making a couples' special day even more special, these businesses have to be organised and at the top of their game every time.”

An award ceremony will be held in London on February 28.
