Carlisle United's game at Bradford City has been postponed - three hours before kick-off.

The game was called off after a 12pm pitch inspection at Valley Parade.

Match referee Will Finnie deemed the surface unplayable.

Bradford had hoped to get the game on and said the pitch was playable yesterday.

It had not, though, recovered from the overnight freezing temperatures, with freezing fog also descending on the ground.

A statement from the Bantams said: "This afternoon’s scheduled visit of Carlisle United has been postponed due to a frozen pitch.

"Today’s match referee assessed the playing surface at the University of Bradford Stadium at 12.00pm, deeming it unplayable, despite it passing an inspection yesterday afternoon.

"Temperatures have not risen sufficiently ahead of kick-off, with areas of the pitch partially frozen at the south end of the ground, by The TL Dallas Stand.

"Bradford City AFC would like to apologise for the inconvenience this has caused. All tickets purchased for the game remain valid for the rearranged date, which will be confirmed in due course."

The inspection came at a time many of United's four-figure travelling support were making their way to west Yorkshire.

Some Blues fans have criticised the decision to inspect the pitch at that time and not earlier in the day.

The postponement will now mean another midweek rearrangement for the Cumbrians in the second half of the season.

The game is one of a number of EFL games to fall victim to the freezing weather today.

Seven other League Two games are off, including Barrow's home game against Salford City.

United - who will remain fourth in the table, given other postponements - will return to action on Tuesday night with the visit of Hartlepool United.
