CREWS at fire stations in Carlisle almost had a new recruit this week, after rescuing a bulldog from the banks of a city river and being unable to find the owner.

Crews from both of the city's fire stations were called to the rescue of the dog dubbed 'Betty the Bulldog' on Wednesday evening, January 18, when she was spotted on the banks of the River Petteril near to Sainsbury's.

The crews rescued the pooch and are now trying to reunite her with her owner, taking her to Craig Robinson Vets on Wigton Road in the city.
