AS layers of frost and black ice formed across north Cumbria this week, one resident has vented his frustration at the lack of roads being gritted in the area.

Weather warnings were placed across Cumbria as temperatures fell below zero degrees on January 16 and 17.

Ashley, a resident in Carlisle, witnessed a few precarious situations as cars struggled to gain control as they skidded on black ice due to a lack of treatment.

He indicated Upperby Road, Currock Road and Pennine Way were particularly dangerous under the weather conditions.

"We pay good money for our taxes, much like the rest of the city, and these areas have been completely ignored.

"What happens if an ambulance has to get somewhere in a hurry?" he said.

The resident said as he was driving down Currock Road on the morning of January 16, when one car ahead was driving at 'two mph, as safe as they possibly could' but ended up skidding onto the kerb - very close to a child.

"It's very dangerous and it was the exact same just before Christmas - something needs to be done now," he said.

Stagecoach had to cancel some of their services within the city due to a lack of roads being treated - causing late runnings and complete cancellations.

The bus provider was temporarily unable to serve Queensway, Sunneymeade, Harraby Estate and Belah Road.

Cumbria County Council have been approached for comment.
