Carlisle United have revealed that alleged racist chanting by some fans is being investigated.

The Boxing Day game against Bradford City is under scrutiny after reports of offensive chanting.

The Blues said they have carried out their own measures to look into the incident.

They are also discussing the matter with the EFL.

United, in a statement, underlined their zero-tolerance stance against such behaviour.

The club said that, during the December 26 game, a home fan reported to the club and police and racist chants were coming from the Warwick Road End.

“We immediately deployed response stewards to the area identified, along with covert police spotters," said chief executive Nigel Clibbens.

“The extra visibility of the stewards resulted in an end to the chanting from that point on."

However, the club say they received further complaints after the game from both United and Bradford fans about the same incident.

They have not, though, identified those responsible.

Clibbens added: “I reiterate, on behalf of the club, that I am sorry that this incident took place. We abhor this behaviour and maintain a zero-tolerance approach.

“On the day, neither the police or the stewards saw or could identify those who were chanting, so no action could be taken at that point.

“We take these matters very seriously and have been working with the police as we do all we can to find those responsible and, if identified, strong sanctions will be issued.

“For the tiny minority who behave in an offensive, anti-social or unacceptable manner the message is clear, you will be dealt with through a combination of police action and club bans.

“Anyone with any information about this incident please contact the club confidentially at media@carlisleunited.co.uk.”

Cumbria Police have also commented on the alleged incidents. The police account for Carlisle United games, posting on Twitter, said: "This behaviour is not something that will be tolerated and not something we want associated with our club!

"The behaviour of a few has a massive impact on others around you as well as the club being penalised. Such behaviour will see positive action taken and potential bans!

"Anyone with any information surrounding the incident and those involved should make contact via 101, Crimestoppers, or using this LINK for the attention of 2208."
