A coastguard team has released a round-up of all their callouts from 2022, from missing person searches to water rescues.

Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team said throughout 2022 they were called out on 76 separate occasions, with a total of 78 casualties – of people and pets – aided or rescued during these missions.

Of these callouts, there were 18 lost or missing person searches, 10 water rescues, 10 boat/vessel assistances, seven technical rope/mud rescues, seven distress calls, and 24 other various missions.

A spokesperson from Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team said: “Taskings were either to maritime incidents coordinated by HM Coastguard through our team’s officers in charge and maritime rescue coordination centre Belfast Coastguard, or to assist partner emergency services.

“Sadly, a number of our taskings in 2022 did not end with a positive outcome and our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of those loved ones no longer with us.

“We are thankful to our partner emergency services of Cumbria Police, North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust, and Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, who we work alongside, as well as the many SAR assets which we routinely work with to achieve a common goal.

“Routinely for us, that's our flank teams of Maryport Coastguard Rescue Team, Millom Coastguard Rescue Team, St Bees RNLI, Workington Lifeboat and Maryport Rescue.

“We often hear some members of the public are confused and unclear as to what HM Coastguard are [sic] responsible for and what tasks we undertake to help our communities. “Hopefully, by sharing this short incident summary, we can help to raise this awareness.

HM Coastguard is responsible for the initiation and coordination of civil maritime search and rescue within the UK search and rescue region.

This includes the mobilisation, organisation and tasking of adequate resources to respond to persons either in distress at sea, or to persons at risk of injury or death on the cliffs or shoreline of the UK as well as some inland waters.

For Cumbria this includes Derwentwater, Ullswater, Coniston and Windermere.
