A MAN has appeared in court accused of two allegedly unprovoked violent attacks on successive days in Brampton earlier this week.

Matthew Kerr, 32, faces two charges following incidents which were reported to police on Boxing Day and Tuesday.

One alleges that he unlawfully and maliciously caused a man grievous bodily harm with intent to do so in Brampton on December 27. This arises out of an incident which is said to have taken place on a town street and left the man with a broken collarbone and several fractures.

A Cumbria Constabulary spokesman has said: “Police were called at 11.03pm on December 27 to the report of an incident involving two men on Moatside, Brampton. Police attended the scene.”

The spokesman added: “A man in his 50s was taken to hospital for medical attention. He received injuries including a fracture to his collarbone.”

Kerr also faces a second charge which alleges that he assaulted a different man hours earlier, on Boxing Day, causing him actual bodily harm. This is said to arise out of an incident in a car park outside Brampton’s Co-op store.

When he appeared at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court from custody this afternoon (Thursday), Kerr, who is said to be of no fixed address, spoke to confirm his name and date of birth.

No pleas were formally entered to either of the charges he faces during the short hearing.

After listening to submissions from lawyers in the case, District Judge John Temperley sent the case to Carlisle Crown Court.

Kerr, whose address was initially listed on court papers as Stanley Road, Brampton, is due appear in front of a judge at the crown court for a plea and trial preparation hearing on January 23.

In the meantime he has been remanded in custody by the district judge.
