England cruised to a 3-0 win over Senegal in the World Cup last-16 - after a crucial save from ex-Carlisle United keeper Jordan Pickford.

The Three Lions set up a quarter-final clash with France thanks to goals from Jordan Henderson, Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka.

And Pickford played a vital part in the victory with an important save before England had got in front.

He did well to keep out a Boulaye Dia shot in the 35th minute at a stage Senegal were causing Gareth Southgate's side some problems.

That featured in a third consecutive clean sheet in the Qatar tournament for the 28-year-old goalkeeper.

Four minutes after Pickford's impressive stop, Jude Bellingham set up fellow midfielder Henderson to slot England in front.

Kane then dobled the lead shortly before half-time after a break from Bellingham and a pass from Phil Foden.

And England's margin was made more emphatic in the 57th minute when Foden supplied Saka to score his third goal of the tournament with a deft finish.

Everton No1 Pickford - who made 18 appearances whilst on loan at Carlisle from Sunderland in the 2013/14 season - was seldom troubled by Senegal in the second half as England eased through.

It set up a last-eight clash with holders France, who defeated Poland 3-1 earlier on Sunday.

Two goals from Kylian Mbappe and one from Olivier Giroud saw Didier Deschamps' side through despite a late Robert Lewandowski penalty for Poland.

They will meet England next Saturday at 7pm UK time.

They became the third and fourth sides to reach the last eight in Qatar, after the Netherlands and Argentina progressed on Saturday.

Should England defeat a star-studded French side, a semi-final against Morocco, Spain, Portugal or Switzerland would follow on Wednesday, December 14.

Next Saturday, meanwhile, is shaping up to be a mouthwatering one for Cumbrian football fans, with Carlisle United taking on Barrow in League Two six hours before the England-France clash gets under way.
