A HIKER who arranges a Christmas Day hike for those who may be spending the holiday alone is excited to return to the Lakes this year.

Jay Mistry, from Huddersfield, has been donning the outfit of Santa Clause since 2019 in which he hiked to the top of Scafell Pike - sending out an open-invite to all via social media.

Originally seven people turned up, but each year the numbers have been growing organically, with Jay hoping this years' hike could be the biggest turnout yet.

This year, the group ramble will be meeting at Moot Hall in centre of Keswick at 10am (December 25) and will head up Laterigg and back into Keswick.

"We've got another fantastic group this year, and it's growing momentum as years progress too which is great as I know I’m helping people," he said.

It all started with the environmental engineer's family going on holiday at Christmas time, making him realise that there must be so many others in a similar situation to him.

"Christmas can be one of the loneliest days of the year. It's important that we support each other.

"The pandemic's shown how much pressure is being placed on people's mental health and how much loneliness is out there. Its made people feel very isolated I think.

"It's something to do and helps get the Christmas spirit out there," he said prior to his 2021 hike.

Getting into hiking was a way for Jay to lose weight but now, he says it helps benefit his mental health - making the Lake District, very much so, his 'second home'.

Dogs and people alike are all welcome to join Jay and the pack for what will be a merry outing full of plenty of laughs, spectacular scenery and Christmas cheer.
