Carlisle’s Danny Christie has the makings of being a “star” in the elite bare-knuckle boxing scene, reckon fight experts.

The Currock man overpowered Darren Godfrey to win his second BKFC fight in just over a minute.

And, after the 37-year-old’s dominant victory in Newcastle, illustrious former fighter Chris Lytle predicted a bright future for the Cumbrian.

Former mixed martial arts star Lytle, commentating on BKFC’s coverage of the fight, said: “I know it’s only his second fight, but in my opinion, you can see Danny Christie has all the makings of being a star in this.

“We’ve seen great power, great poise, and we’ve seen he can take a punch himself.

“You have to be the hammer and the nail. You have to be great at both of those to be great in this sport.

“He can do it.”

Christie followed his debut victory over Terry Brazier at Wembley Arena in August with a one-sided win over Bristol fighter Godfrey at Newcastle’s Walker Activity Dome.

He floored his light-heavyweight opponent three times in the first round before the referee stopped the fight after just 67 seconds.

Commentator Sean Wheelock described it as “one-way traffic”, adding that Godfrey “simply had no answer” to Christie’s “ferocious offence”.

Lytle, describing the early stages, said the Currock boxer was “all over” his opponent.

He said: “Every time Christie lands a clean shot, Godfrey goes down.”

He went on: “He looked a lot more poised and relaxed out there.

“That first fight would have been a huge confidence boost.”

Christie was cheered on by a vocal following from his home city.

He is expected to line up more fights next year with the possibility of a title shot if he maintains his impressive early impact on the sport.
