CUMBRIAN martial arts students brought back bronze medals from the World Taekwon-Do Championship.

The World International Taekwon-Do Council hosted the championships with competitors from all over the world including Mexico, Malaysia, Netherlands and Italy.

The West Cumbrian club, UKTC, took part in several events including patterns, sparring, special technique, power test, team patterns and team sparring. Students who competed were Megan Talford, Ethan Holmes, Sam Webster, Emily Long, Kevin Long and Luke Webster.

Luke Webster, club instructor, said: "As an instructor, our goal is to ensure that our students become better than we could ever hope, the world of martial arts is a tough one and takes effort and determination to succeed.

"They are constantly improving each and every class and are becoming world class martial artists, we are exceptionally proud of each and every one of them, they have worked extremely hard to get to where they are today and deserve all of the success that may come their way."

Sam Webster, 10, achieved third place making him the British champion for his division.

Emily Long, 11, lost her semi-final bout in sparring, but fought "absolutely brilliantly and gave her opponent an exceptionally difficult fight, Emily is headstrong and a fantastic student, she says next time will be her time."

Kevin Long, 42, achieved bronze in sparring and Ethan Holmes, nine, achieved gold in three events, silver in two and placed in the top 10 individuals from the entire Championship.

Megan Talford, 13, achieved bronze in one event and gold in another. Luke Webster, 31, achieved bronze in team patterns, making him and his team the British Champions for their division.

Out of the individual clubs that entered, the UKTC came top of the table and won the championship.

The club runs all across Cumbria in Workington, Whitehaven, Egremont, Maryport, Keswick and Cockermouth.
