Public toilets have been closed in response to an incident of vandalism.

The public toilets in Brampton have been closed since late last week, on Thursday, November 18, in response to what is believed to be ongoing vandalism.

Making the decision to close the toilets was Carlisle City Council, a spokesperson from which said at the time (November 18): “Unfortunately over the last few days the public toilets at Brampton have been subject to a number of incidents of vandalism, with our cleaning operatives reporting new damage on a daily basis.

“We have therefore taken the decision to close the facility for a few days to try and break this pattern.

“We will also notify the local police to and ask if their officers can give the area some passing attention.

“We hope to re-open the facility next week.”

The repairs are still to be completed, with the council issuing a statement on the issue yesterday (November 21): “The toilets in Brampton are currently closed due to vandalism.

“We anticipate to have the facilities reopen later this week once repairs have been completed.”

Explaining their role and providing more detail into what vandalism occurred in the toilets, a spokesperson from Cumbria police said: “Police were contacted on 17th November to report criminal damage to the public toilets on Main Street, Brampton.

“It is believed the incident occurred between November 14 and 17, with damage caused to the toilet roll dispenser.

“Anyone with information relating to this incident can report online at www.cumbria.police.uk/report-it, quoting incident number 192 of November 17, 2022.

“You can also phone on 101.

“Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”

This is not the first time such vandalism has occurred at the public toilets in Brampton, as they were locked by the City Council in 2020 for the same reason.

Back then, the fixtures and fittings in both the male and female toilets were damaged, leaving the council with no choice but to put padlocks on the doors.

The toilets were vandalised between December 21 and 22, 2020, but the council wasn’t made aware until December 23 of that year, which was when they were closed.
