This week, the first public consultation for an upcoming garden village’s design code gets underway.

This follows on from last year’s design code pilot programme, where 14 authorities tested the draft national model design code.

Carlisle is one of 25 areas in England that have been awarded a share of £3million to help them set their standards for design locally.

When finalised, the design code will influence new development at St Cuthbert’s Garden Village.

To help create a code with the right balance, Carlisle City Council said it needs to understand more about what existing local communities think about this part of Carlisle and the design of new development.

Public consultation events on the St Cuthbert’s Design Code will take place at several locations between 2pm and 7pm on various dates.

These are: Tuesday, November 22, at Carlisle Racecourse; Wednesday, November 23, at Creighton Rugby Club, and; Thursday, November 24, at Cummersdale Village Hall.

People can still take part without going to one of these events by submitting comments online at https://www.stcuthbertsgv.co.uk/Design-Code between Monday, November 21 and Friday, December 2.

Carlisle City Cllr Marilyn Bowman, portfolio holder for economy, enterprise and housing, said: “We know how important it is to engage with local residents and businesses.

“These events aim to seek views and input on key themes and locations, to help inform the content of the future Design Code for St Cuthbert’s Garden Village.”

St Cuthbert’s Garden Village is one of the largest projects of its kind nationally and the largest in the north of England.
