THE Friends of Carlisle Victorian and Turkish Baths have expressed concern after the disappearance of original feature mirrors in the historic venue, ahead of its final closure.

Regular users noticed that the last of the original cubicle mirrors had disappeared in the weeks leading up to the Baths' closure on November 12.

Having been alerted to the disappearance, the Friends group said they contacted GLL, who operated the Turkish Baths on behalf of the City Council, to ask if the mirrors had been placed in storage for safekeeping.

However, the Friends said GLL were unaware the mirrors were missing and reported the matter to Cumbria Police earlier this week after being contacted by the Friends.

Thanks to a request for users to check any photos they might have taken in the Baths to see when the mirrors were last seen, the Friends added they have been able to determine that the items were removed in the three weeks between September 29 and October 20.

The Carlisle Victorian and Turkish Baths, which first opened in 1884, were mothballed by the city council last week after 138 years' service.

The Friends held an event to mark the closure. Julie Minns, chair of the Friends of Carlisle Victorian and Turkish Baths said: “So many people have spoken to us about their memories of the Baths that we felt it was important that there was an opportunity to say goodbye.

“Whether you learnt to swim at the Baths, jumped off the old balcony or supped hot Bovril in the cafe, do please come along and help us say thank you to a building that has served eight generations of Carlisle residents.”

Anyone with information about the mirrors can contact Cumbria Police giving crime reference number CR1001631 and police incident number CP-20221114-0148.
