MEMBERS of Carlisle's Local Committee have agreed a package of funding grants to help support several local organisations. 

The deal which has been accepted by the Local Committee will commit £107,000 to several local organisations that provide essential care and support to those in need.

The grant also aims to support health and wellbeing initiatives, improve outcomes for children and young people, and develop the local economy, infrastructure and thriving communities.

The funding supported by the committee will be allocated to four main areas:

"A funding award of £6,491 from the Area Wide Grants Fund was agreed. Part of this grant will help the Carlisle Cathedral to repair and restore its clock (£1,500) and also the restoration and conservation of the Tullie House’s Railway Banners (£1,750).

"£38,500 will fund diverse organisations with the aim of helping to improve and conserve materials and infrastructure for children and young people’s fun and sports activities. The main beneficiary is Detached Youth Work, who will be awarded £20,000 towards starting up a partnership detached youth work project in key areas like Botcherby, Harraby, Bellevue, Raffles or Longtown.

"£9,080 from Carlisle Holiday Activities Partnership (CHAP) 0-19 Funding will be awarded to Carlisle Matters. The funds will be used for winter splash indoor events taking place at Botcherby Community Centre, Longtown Community Centre, Brampton Community Centre and Greystone Community Centre.

"In response to the cost of living crisis, £53,400 was made available to support families and individuals access food, basic household items such as white goods, fuel payments and other essentials. Gateway 4 Women and Carlisle Community Help will be the two main beneficiaries with £11,000 and £14,000 being awarded, respectively."

Chair of Carlisle Local Committee, Cllr Cyril Weber, reflected on the new funding package.

She said: "the Local Committee members and I are really pleased to support so many different areas of the community, and in particular to create opportunities for our young people to reach their potential.

“With the cost of living on the rise, we are thankful we’ve been able to provide funding for these initiatives and to play a small part helping residents and organisations during this difficult time - which is affecting everyone from children to the elderly”.

“I only wish we could do more but we will continue to do our best to support those in need. I am exceptionally grateful to everyone involved in helping deliver these projects and support schemes to communities in Carlisle”.
