AN archaeology group were in awe after listening to a lecture about the discovery of the 'find of the century' Viking hoard.
Appleby Archaeology Group were in for a treat when they listened to a lecture from Andrew Nicholson about 'the richest collection of rare and unique' Viking hoard ever found in Britain or Ireland, which was found near Kirkcudbright in Dumfries & Galloway.
Described as 'the find of the century', it was found by metal detectorist Derek McLennan in a field at Balmaghie near Kirkcudbright in 2014 and was later excavated by Andrew.
It is believed it was buried around AD900 and contains over 100 diverse objects, from silver, gold and jewelled treasures to rarely-surviving textiles, including wool, linen and Scotland’s earliest examples of silk.
