Laidlaw Auctioneers and Valuers in Carlisle have some exciting and exotic lots to sell as their next auction quickly approaches.

Founded in 2013 by BBC antiques expert Paul Laidlaw, the firm handles a broad spectrum of material, from prehistoric artefacts to contemporary design, from medals to modern art.

The next auction, held on Friday, November 11 and Saturday, November 12, will feature a bust of a Soviet ambassador and a copy of John Ogilby’s atlas ‘Britannica’.

Olgibly’s Britannica is significant piece of history with it being Britian’s first road map.

First published in 1675, it presents strip maps which survey 7500 miles of road and countryside, these strip maps cover one route at a time from London to Carlisle.

Although somewhat inaccurate in comparison with contemporary maps, this is a charming item of cartographic history which is estimated at £200 - £300.

A spectacular bust of former Soviet ambassador to the UK, Ivan Maisky, is also available to bid on.

News and Star: Sculpted in the 1930s by renowned modernist sculptor, Sir Jacob Epstein, Maisky’s genial but stern character has been encapsulated by Epstein in bronze.

An impressive collection of Georgian and Victorian silver vinaigrettes is also up for auction.

These small, decorative boxes were carried by genteel folk as a means of masking unpleasant odours when promenading in impolite society.

The examples being offered in this auction are expected to sell for prices in the region of £100-200 each.

This auction also includes two rare examples of the B2 radio sets issued to SOE agents working clandestinely in enemy territory during the Second World War.

Commonly disguised in suitcases, these are of the type that would have been used by heroines such as Violette Szabó, Odette Hallowes and Noor Inayat Khan.

News and Star: The two examples in the auction have pre-sale estimates of £2500-3500.

Laidlaw Auctioneers and Valuers is based at The Temple Auction Rooms, Saint Nicholas Street, Carlisle.

The auction on November 11 and 12 contains 1350 lots with live internet and in-room bidding.

The sale is on view to the public on Thursday 10th and during the auction. The fully illustrated catalogue can be viewed online.
