Promising Cumbrian boxers showcased their skills at a sell-out show in Carlisle.

The Crown & Mitre hotel in the city hosted Border City Amateur Boxing Club’s first home show of the 2022/23 season.

It saw 15 bouts on the card as some of the club’s top young talents impressed in the ring.

The event last Friday included four skills bouts and 11 50-50 scoring bouts.

It saw success for a number of Border City’s young fighters.

Youth boxer Declan Morton went home with the boxer of the night award after his hard-fought battle with Scottish fighter Conor Morgan from Keir Hardie ABC in Motherwell.

Their closely-fought contest was also named bout of the night as Morton scored well with body and head shots to pick up a unanimous win in an absorbing contest.

National champion John Joe Carrigan then produced his latest winning performance at the open show.

The Border City fighter, who has won a string of titles in recent times, went up against Scottish champion Cameron Sleith, also from the Keir Hardie club.

Carrigan put on an impressive performance and stopped his opponent in the third round.

There was also victory for Border City schoolboy boxer Mason Watson, who impressed with a unanimous win against Jack Smith from Kenton ABC in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Border City ABC coach Ian Archibald said the open show was a big success.

“It was a very successful night for the club as we had a lot of our new boxers entering the ring for the debuts and not disappointing,” he said.

“The coaching team were very happy with all the boxers and the progress they are making.

“I’d also like to give a big shout out to all the sponsors and spectators who came and supported the club on the night.”
