THE RSPCA is trying to trace the owner of a terrier dog in Carlisle so badly neglected that large patches of his fur are missing.

The West Highland terrier was found straying under the Eastern Way road bridge on Durranhill Road in the town by a member of the public.

The male dog, who was not microchipped, was suffering from a significant skin infection, which had resulted in major hair loss. A vet who examined him later said his condition was among the worst she’d ever seen.

The terrier has been named Yogi by staff at the vets he was taken for treatment and the RSPCA is now appealing for anyone who knows how the dog came to be found wandering in such bad condition to come forward.

News and Star: Yogi is being looked after by RSPCA staffYogi is being looked after by RSPCA staff (Image: RSPCA)RSPCA inspector Chris Towler said: “This poor dog was in an atrocious state when he was found. He had significant skin disease with patches of thickening and sores.

"It was the vet’s opinion that the dog would have been suffering in this condition for months and months.

“He was in dreadful discomfort as his skin was so itchy, while he also has other health issues. Such was the state he was in that he needed to have urgent medical treatment.”

Since he was found at around midday on Monday, October 17, Yogi has, happily, responded well to his treatment.

His skin is no longer inflamed, while he has seen a small amount of hair growth, which enabled the vets to identify his breed.

The inspector added: “Yogi could have strayed, or he could have been abandoned, so we are keen to receive any information from the public so that we can establish a line of enquiry.”

Anyone who may have seen or know of a dog matching Yogi’s description in Carlisle is asked to ring the RSPCA appeals line number on 0300 123 8018.
