Each year, Egremont Town Council invites the public to nominate an individual or group for the Margaret Woodburn Good Citizen’s Awards.

This is to recognise the selfless work they do for and within the Parish of Egremont.

This year The Lad Barber were nominated for a number of reasons.

Gary Sommerville and his team do a lot of fundraising and to date, donations have been given to the Henderson suite but they also support locals in Egremont by sponsoring local teams at the Egremont Rugby League Club and the Windscale Club.

Currently they are also sponsoring the Moor Row youth football team.

Elaine Woodburn, Chair of Egremont Town Council said: "The Lad Barber is a perfect example of a business at the heart of the community who not only provide a great service but contribute to help those who need that extra bit of support and in these times their help is needed more than ever.

"The whole team should be rightly proud of all they do, the Town Council definitely is."

Egremont councillors felt that Lad Barber were deserved winners of the Group award and this was evidenced further when councillors read that they carry out a unique initiative from the shop which is a boot swap – the team recognises that football is a popular local sport but know that the kit can be expensive for many families so they help those who wish to get involved by providing free boots which they receive from players who have grown out of them, if anyone has any football boots they no longer use but are still in good condition, you can drop them off at Lad Barber and if a child is in need of some football boots, call into the shop, they are sure to help.
