Officers ensured the city council was seen to be showing its respects and marking the occasion appropriately.

“We’ve recently seen, sadly, the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and I would like to thank all those officers who worked really hard to make sure that everything this council was supposed to do to mark that sad, solemn and historic occasion, was done as efficiently and with as much dignity as there could possibly be.”

A live screening of the state funeral was held in Bitts Park and councillors were told that residents flocked to the event to pay their respects.

Cllr Higgs said: “Officers also moved quickly to make sure there was screening of the state funeral which was attended by, I believe, about 300 people in Bitts Park.”

A screen was placed in front of the Queen Victoria monument for the event.

Attendees at the live screening joined-in with the National Anthem as it was sang in the service.
