A DANGEROUS pothole caught the attention of a local councillor after a resident got their car stuck in it.

The Cumberland councillor for Stanwix Urban, Lib Dem Brian Wernham, said he went to Cromwell Crescent, where the big pothole has appeared, as he was called by residents who were concerned about the danger to other car drivers.

Cllr Wernham said "Being local, I dashed over immediately and was surprised to see the car had fallen into a one-metre deep sinkhole.

“Residents had tried unsuccessfully to get the police interested because this is an unadopted road.

“However, because I have local knowledge, I know that it is a public highway that leads down to adopted roads such as Carlton Gardens.

“So, I found the police and arranged for them to come and put some safety signs up to ensure that nobody drove into it, or even worse, a pedestrian could walk into it dark and unlit at night.

“Cumbria County Council has said that they will come down and put some signage up as well and tell the owner of the road so he can be identified, and repairs can be carried out."

Cumbria County Council workers arrived at the scene.

Cllr Wernham said he has met with them, and they started putting up proper barriers to make it safe.

United Utilities will also repair the road.

A spokesperson from Cumbria Police said they deployed police officers to the area and, because they didn’t have the signage required, asked the council and Highways to attend.
