A FAMILY have described their elation after bumping into Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise filming in the Lake District.

Adrian Newby was walking up High Crag, Buttermere with his daughter Becca and their cockapoo Bernie when they happened to run into the Mission Impossible actor.

The retired police officer and his 15-year-old daughter are attempting to complete all the Wainwrights, travelling from their home in Yanwath to tackle High Crag when they met the A-Lister.

“Before we started walking, I joked to my daughter that Tom Cruise might be filming here,” Mr Newby, who is originally from Kendal, said.

“I wish I hadn’t because she wouldn’t shut up about it.

“When we got to the top, the mist had started to clear and you could hear the helicopters around. When the first copter landed, a group of lads got out and we asked them if Tom Cruise was coming and they said he’d be coming shortly.

“They paraglided down – I assume testing out the weather conditions.

“We waited ten minutes and a film crew got out. The security guard came out and said they were just doing exercises and Tom wouldn’t be coming.”

Disappointed, the father and daughter began to head back when a helicopter arrived carrying a very special passenger.

Mr Newby said: “We waited another ten minutes and started to head back. Then the door to one of the copters opens and out walks Tom Cruise.

“We started waving and shouting Tom. There was a handful of people up there at the time. The security guard told us we can’t take any pictures but I explained we actually can because we’re in a public place.

“Tom heard me and said it’s fine and said if we want photos to just come over.

“We went straight across and I shoved my daughter out the way to stand next to him. A crew member took the photo and Tom started asking about our dog.

“He said he was lovely and got himself kitted up and said ‘look I do do my own stunts’ and then paraglided off the mountain.

“I thought you don’t see that everyday!

“The fact he called us up for a picture was really nice and had a nice conversation with us.

“People didn’t believe us when we got to the bottom – no-one had any idea he was going to be there. There would be 1,000 people if they did!

“He just seemed like a such a nice bloke. He was really nice to us.”
