WETHERSPOONS pubs across the nation have a strict no music and no football viewing policy.

But a Wetherspoons pub in Carlisle is a rare exception to the rule.

A Channel 5 documentary, Wetherspoons: How Do They Do It, revealed that owner Tim Martin apparently read a famous essay by George Orwell called 'Perfect Pub' - which advised against music when eating and socialising in pubs.

But, if you've ever stepped into Carlisle's The William Rufus on Botchergate on a weekend, you'll know that football and music often go hand in hand with their cheap food and drink prices - very much straying away from traditional protocol offered by other Wetherspoons across the nation.

The Wetherspoons chain currently has around 850 pubs within the company, with a vast majority abiding by Mr Martin's guidelines.

However, 50 pubs within this fall under the name of a Lloyds Bar - which is still owned and operated by the company.

A spokesperson from the pub chain said Lloyds bars are the exceptions.

"The vast majority of those pubs are Wetherspoon (no music/no football etc), and around 50 are Lloyds.

"The company is very much in line with Wetherspoon pubs and what they offer - and the Lloyds are the exceptions.

"It offers something different from the majority of Wetherspoon pubs, namely music and DJs at certain times and some will show the football too," they said.
