A CARLISLE establishment has been handed a new two-out-of-five food hygiene rating following its latest inspection.

Cafe Isabela, at 36 Lowther Street, Carlisle was given the score after assessment on August 9, the Food Standards Agency's website shows.

The report said that while food handling and management of food safety was generally satisfactory, there was improvement necessary in the 'cleanliness and condition of facilities and building'.

Senjy Rodrigues, the owner of Cafe Isabela, said: "At the time of the inspecton our flooring was peeling off, so our rating was mostly due to the structural problem.

"Since the inspection we have now paid out to install new flooring.

"Due to the extremely hot weather we were experiencing over the summer months our fridges were affected as the kitchen was unable to stay cool enough with temperatures reaching over 30C outside.

"We will be asking for another inspection shortly."

It means that of Carlisle's 209 restaurants, cafes and canteens with ratings, 186 (89 per cent) have ratings of five and none have zero ratings.
