FOR this weeks nostalgia, we looked back at some Cumbrian sporting memories. We looked at teams old and new to find out what sports were most popular in our area.

One popular sport is football, we have both men and women teams in our area. One of the first older teams we saw were the 5-aside football competition which was held at Highfield in Cockermouth as part of the Cockermouth Carnival gala week. A womens team was formed for the event who called themselves Ja-Ja's. Another older team we found were the Caldew Under-12 team who won the cup in 1975.

Some newer football teams we found were the Whitehaven Amateurs football club, under 11s who competed in events across Cumbria. Another Whitehaven Amateurs features who are the under 9s team who took part in the Cumberland FA Festival of Football at Frenchfields, Penrith in 2015.

We have soem golfers in our ranks as well. The Brampton junior golf team are pictured in 1976 who won the cup. There are some winning ladies teams in golf as well as the ladies winning team at Carlisle Golf Club are pictured.

Netball is a popular sport in Cumbria. Brampton YFC netball team are pictured who played in the county YFC sports day at Penrith in 1986. Netball remains as popular as ever as Cumbrian Schools run a Multisports Festival each year which are County finals at various venues around Carlisle including the Sands Centre and Bitts Park.

Rugby is also a popular sport as the 1970 Penrith rugby team is pictured. Some newer teams are the Keswick Green and Cockermouth team. Paul Greening gets the ball away from the scrum in their match in 2016.
