A traditional Carlisle flower show saw a sharp uptake in attendance in its 59th year.
The Wetheral Flower Show, which was held earlier this month in the village of Wetheral, east of Carlisle, was unable to be put on two years ago because of the Covid 19 pandemic and lockdown.
The show was welcomed last year again, but with less entries than usual, and now it is back to normal this year with an uptake in entries and attendance.
Isabel Ferguson, one of the organisers of the Wetheral Flower Show, commented on the event: “It went very, very well because two years ago it was postponed because of covid and last year we were really down on numbers.
“We had 419 entries, and this year we were up to 557, it was up again after missing a year due to Covid altogether and then having a down year.
On particular highlights of this year’s show, she said: “The enthusiasm from the villagers and the good attendance.
“The WI (women’s institute) did teas and coffees, we had a sale of produce at the end and anyone could leave their produce at the end to be sold.
“You put a donation in for anything and anything that was left over we donated to the food bank in Carlisle.
“It was held in the village community hall, it is a community event raising money for the community hall, it's not a money raising event per se, it's been going for 59 years, next year will of course be the 60th show.”
On the topic of 60 years, and if there will be anything special to mark the milestone, Isabel said: “We'll just carry on the way it was, 60 years is diamond so we might have a diamond theme!”
