AN 18-year-old woman has been taken to hospital with 'life changing injuries' after a crash in the city centre. 

Police are appealing for witnesses following a single vehicle collision at Hardwicke Circus in Carlisle at 7:55pm on Sunday, August 28.

The collision involved a new shape black Landrover Defender, the driver of the vehicle was uninjured.

A passenger in the vehicle, an 18 year-old woman from Carlisle, was taken to Cumberland Infirmary with life-changing injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, an 18-year-old man from Doncaster, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.  He has been released under investigation.

Emergency services were called to the scene, and drivers were warned to avoid the area while investigation work took place.

Castle Way was closed at Shaddongate and Georgian Way was closed at Victoria Place following the collision.

The road was fully re-opened at around 1.30am.

Officers are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or the vehicle driving prior to the collision to contact police.
