A man threatened to put an axe through the head of his victim after he believed he had been in an altercation with his mother.

Connor Sharpe, 20, had gone to the home address of the victim in Workington at 10pm on August 4, claiming the man had shouted at his mother.

Workington Magistrates’  Court heard Sharpe had then threatened to return to the address with a knife.

Pamela Fee, prosecuting, said the victim had been upstairs at the time, and heard shouting on the driveway about a person called Sean.

Ms Fee said Sharpe had threatened to put an axe through his head. The victim informed Sharpe that he was not Sean and put a call in to the police.

The defendant then left the area. He was arrested the following day and made ‘no comment’ throughout police interview.

Ms Fee said it was clear from the victim that Sharpe did not have a weapon at that time but he would come back with a weapon.

John Cooper, defending, said it was a guilty plea with no previous convictions.

He said: “There had been an incident between this gentleman and his mum. He wasn’t there at the time. He has gone to this address. He has taken it upon himself to go round in loyalty to his mum.

“He shouldn’t have gone round at all. His version of events are he has gone round and said, ‘don’t talk to my mum like that’. He said there is no mention of any weapon.”

Sharpe, of Wether Riggs Road, Salterbeck, Workington, pleaded guilty to using threatening, abusive, insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause fear of or provoke unlawful violence.

He was given a 12-month community order with 40 hours of unpaid work and must pay £85 costs and a £114 victim surcharge.
