Workington Reds have been handed an FA Cup trip to South Shields – who are managed by goalscoring legend Kevin Phillips.

The tough away tie in the first qualifying round is Reds’ reward for their 7-0 win at West Allotment Celtic on Saturday.

And it will pit Danny Grainger against former Sunderland hero Phillips, who has been at the South Shields helm since January.

Ambitious South Shields narrowly missed out on promotion from NPL Premier Division last season.

They have plenty of Football League experience in their side with the likes of former Carlisle United duo Lewis Alessandra and Gary Liddle.

Ex-Leeds United, Chelsea and Hartlepool United midfielder Michael Woods is also among the Mariners’ stars.

The tie will be played on Saturday, September 3 at the north east side’s 1st Cloud Arena.

As well as the chance of progressing in the famous competition, the tie will also have £2,250 prize money on offer for the winners.

South Shields sit ninth in NPL Premier after three games.

Workington, meanwhile, progressed through the preliminary round in emphatic style on Saturday.

Goals from David Symington (two), Scott Allison, Steven Rigg, Reuben Jerome, Greg McCaragher and James Hooper saw Grainger’s NPL West side make short work of Northern League outfit West Allotment.
