FOR this weeks nostalgia, we have went back in time to 1974. We looked through our archives at snaps from across Cumbria.

In terms of national news, some headlines from throughout the year were:

1974 was the first year New Year’s Day was celebrated with a public holiday in England.

It was the year Robbie Williams and tennis player Tim Henman were born.

McDonald's opened their first UK restaurant in Woolwich, South East London, and the year saw the last production of steel by the Bessemer process in Britain at Workington steelworks.

We had two general elections this year as Edward Heath failed to created a coalition and Harold Wilson formed a minority government.

This was also the year that the Rubix Cube was made.

In our area we had people preparing for the salmon fishing season. The effects of the two elections was being felt in Cumbria as well as candidates spoke with workers and we had a visit from William Whitelaw MP.

We have children from Nelson Tomlinson school who won an award in a national children’s film festival in 1974.

There is some medical memories as some of the nurses from geriatric ward at the City General Hospital, Carlisle welcoming children from Norman Street Primary School with gifts from their school harvest festival.
