A wildlife trust team hosted the Mayor and Mayoress as part of a special visit where they showed off their hard work.

A Cumbria Wildlife Trust spokesperson said the trust was delighted to host a visit by the Mayor of Carlisle Mike Mitchelson and the Mayoress Anne Mitchelon to their Gosling Sike site in Houghton, Carlisle.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Carlisle were shown Gosling Sike, which is Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s northern office base and is home to a community wildlife garden and wildflower nursery.

Native wildflowers grown at the nursery are used in habitat restoration projects across northwest Cumbria to brighten up community spaces and support pollinating insects.

Volunteers work with staff to grow tens of thousands of plants including ox-eye daisy, meadow cranesbill, red clover, and self-heal that play a vital role in nature’s recovery across Cumbria.

Staff also shared news of an exciting new development, a Cumbrian seed-bank, where native Cumbrian seeds will be stored securely to ensure rare plants are conserved and protected to be enjoyed by future generations.
